    Freshman English/Introduction to Government

     

    Freshman English

     Welcome to freshman English. The purpose of this course is to make you a better reader, writer, and speaker of the English language. You will read texts that demonstrate the range and flexibility of English, and you will write essays that demonstrate your ability to interpret these texts. There will be a good deal of grammar, which is an indispensable part of using English in your daily lives. By the end of the year, we will have encountered novels, plays, and short stories. You will be able to write and speak intelligently about all of them.

     Introduction to Government

    The purpose of this course is to prepare you for the rights and responsibilities inherent to being a citizen in a democracy. You will learn about the U.S. Constitution and its antecedents. You will learm about the purpose and contested role of government in society. You will learn about your rights. By the end of the one-semester course, you will grasp what the framers of the Constitution meant when they sought to form "a more perfect Union."
